I don't mean to make a downer post here, and to be quite honest I have thought long and hard about even posting this. But, I feel I have to. This for everyone who has children, grandchildren or know of people who do.
On Tuesday of next week, my 10 yr old granddaughter will go to the funeral of her 9 yr old friend. All because Morgan either wasn't wearing her seat belt, or, the seat belt was not properly latched.
Morgans mother lost control of her jeep on a very dangerous and tight curve out by my daughters house, the jeep hit a utility pole, Morgan was ejected out the window, and the jeep rolled on top of her.
The speculation is that she was not seat belted, but, her mother insists she was, and that possibly her coat was caught in the seat belt, causing it to not latch correctly. (THIS is where I decided to put this on the forum)..why? Because, I have 9 grandchildren, and except for the baby who is only 1, I don't really pay attention to whether they are buckled "correctly". The rest of my grandkids are all between 9-13. They ALL know to put their seat belts on, thats never an issue, but, what IF this happened to one of them? Coats, book bags, scarves, towels etc...so I'm begging everyone to please please don't just assume your child is seat belted correctly. Take that extra minute to make sure. Tell them when they are buckling up to check the belt for any thing that could be in the way, and to make sure it has clicked tightly. And for your younger ones, please make sure they remain in their car seats, and that those are correctly in place. If you have a baby, and need to feed it, DON'T take the child out while the car is moving, PULL over, feed the child and go on your happy way.
If you are someone who doesn't make their child wear a seat belt or use a car seat, then, I'm asking you to think for one second.
If you were driving down the road, and you were in an accident, and your child was killed, could you live with that? This is what Micah, (Morgans mom) is going to have to live with for the rest of her life. If you have a child who refuses to sit in a car seat etc, its really quite simple, YOU are the PARENT, they are the child!!!!!! The car doesn't MOVE unless they are restrained!
